New Digipak!

This is our new front and back cover and inside for our  FINISHED CD digipak. We decided to re-shoot the band and re-think about the concept further. We decided that this was a much better route to follow.
We think this is so much better and that it will appeal to a much wider audience now.

Our finished website!

After lots of playing around with the website, I have finally finished making it. It took a while, and I had to make lots of changes to the spelling and layout every now and then but I am really happy with how it looks.

Preparing for task 3: What is a focus group?

How are focus groups different from regular 'groups'?

A focus group is different in three ways:
  • The main difference is that it is focused. The group has a discussion on a specific subject .
  • In the group there is always a leader. The leader's job is to keep the group on course.
  • The group's composition and the group discussion are carefully planned for people to talk openly and free. Members encouraged to express their own opinions.

Advantage:

A focus group is a useful method that can be used to measure the reaction of customers to a company’s new product. Focus groups usually provide immediate ideas for the improvement of the  products or concepts they are discussing. They also help find the product requirements of end-user as well as the other needs not addressed by the company . Also focus groups provides an insight on the current position of the company’s competitors and how the customer sees it. It is also good to see the reaction of customers to a product’s design, packaging, price and message.

Disadvantage:

Compared to individual interviews, focus groups are not as efficient in discussing the maximum depth on a particular issue. A particular disadvantage of a focus group is the possibility that the members may not express their honest and personal opinions. They may be hesitant to express their thoughts. Compared with surveys and questionnaires, focus groups are much more expensive to execute.

Evaluation Task 4- 'Explain how we used digital technologies in the construction and research'

Our A2 Media studies project has been built and shown through the use of not only media products but also lots of online media technologies.

My blogger is a good example of how a media technology has enabled me to create vibrant and eye catching set of coursework, and blogs to show other people my progress throughout the production stages of media studies.
I have also been able to record all of my work through images taken not only from the internet (another media technology) but also my own images taken using media technologies such as iphones and cameras.

Without some of these modern technologies, I would have not been able to demonstrate my production to the audience.

Another major contributor to the mass use of Media Technologies would be the open access to the internet.

We relied on this technology throughout the entire production of our music video, both before (pre-production) and after (post-production).

For example 'YouTube' was an important website that we relied on to access inspiration and discover new visual video idea’s.

We used 'Google' as our main search engine to research different artists and find their websites to use as inspiration and to collect ideas.

Similar websites that we researched to draw up our own:

By studying these websites closely we were inspired to take advantage of these Online Technologies.
They demonstrated the use of a live twitter and Instagram feed on their website which updates their audience and viewers with current information, keeping their audience and fans in the loop making it personal.
This is a great way to keep the audience interested and up to date in an easily accessible way!

We created our website for our band with a technology called WIX. By looking at other websites we knew what was important to add to the artists website.
This is yet another example of an online Media Technology. WIX is a programme that allows you to create and distribute your own online website. I was able to add elemtents such as images, videos and links onto the websites and social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the bands fan base who want to be in constant contact with them. This tells you how much we relide on these Media Technologies.

The post-production of our music video involved us using Photoshop to create a CD DIGIPAK full of images, logos and text to market and sell our product.

All these technologies were useful for me because I am a prosumer. They were all free to use which was good for us because it made our pre-production and post-production much easier. I create things and share them through the internet whilst I also consume things that other people have made. All of these things that I have talked about have encouraged and helped me construct and research my music video and digi pak.
By using digital media technologies i have used technological convergence to ensure that i have produced three products as part of a successful campaign. My use of YouTube, Wix, Blogger has enabled me to become a prosumer, a creator of media products to a near professional standard. The use of final cut pro as a piece of editing software has taught me how to select and organise a music video to a very high standard using semi-professional media equpitment. I have also been able to share ideas and research  into global products. Digital technology has made available to me opportunities to upload, share and distribute my products using YouTube as a free online broadcast platform. It is also interactive as my audience have been able to feedback, like and comment on my products using features such as, Survey Monkey, YouTube and Facebook comments and other online tools. This gave us the necessary feedback that we needed to step forward and understand what we could have changed to make our video and digi pack better. All of these new skills learned on this course have enabled to gain experience not only as a user of digital technology, but also become a producer. This is important because it gives an understanding of the media in the online age.

Directors Commentary:

Continuing Task 4:

As part of this task we have to write up a script for us to use for our ‘DIRECTORS COMMENTARY'

This involves us talking to the audience about the technologies that we used for our music video production. We needed to include information such as
  1. Creative idea/build
  2. Programs
  3. Software
  4. Equipment
  5. Editing
Below is a copy of our script that we used for this video shoot:

“Naïve” Task 4 – Script

Hello I’m Liv
I’m Charlie
I’m Sophia
And I’m Mariella
And this is our music video

Liv: At the very beginning we were interested in creating an indie/rock style music video.
This lead us to looking up similar types of bands to Bombay Bicycle club and The Kooks on YouTube. This is where we gathered the inspiration for our main theme and narrative of the music video. We found the song ‘Naïve’ by The Kooks from one of the videos we stumbled across.

Charlie: Every stage of production for our music video involved many different  types media technologies. We filmed with a Sony FS100 during the production of our video, which is a professional level camera that creates a crisp, bright image to give a very professional quality to our product. We used Zeiss 18 mm prime lenses for wide shots, 35mm and 50 mm for medium and 85 mm for close-up and extreme close up shots. We shot at full HD quality which is similar professional video.

Sophia: At the beginning of the video we have a girl standing in a room looking confused to attract our audience from an early stage. This adds to part of our overall narrative which reflects on the lyrics in the song. We then used a variety of shots, such as close ups of all the band members to introduce them and to attract a female audience.

Mariella: In the post-production process we used a software called Final Cut Pro on the Apple Mac system, which we edited our shots on. This is a professional editing facility, which enabled us to create a unique and professional looking video. This professional editing facility is accurate to one twenty-fifths of a second giving us complete control in shaping the finished product. Thus creating a unique and professional looking video.

Liv: We used tools such as label logging to navigate through our footage in a much more organised and efficient way, and the blade tool to manipulate the shots and make them the exact length that we needed. Once we had fine cut the footage, we then used professional software called AFTER AFFECTS in order to make the transitions into the scenes more subtle and easy on the eye, these transitions were when we went through the walls of the rooms. Because we had kept the camera at the same height during the shooting, there was no need to further manipulate the image digitally in order to keep the girl on the same plain.

Charlie: A key aspect to the post production included lip syncing the visual footage to and matching this to the audio music track behind it. Through doing this we create a fluid and coherent media text where the actors actually appear to be performing the song which is essential for the band’s credibility. This was achieved by using a digital clapperboard when shooting.

Sophia: The overall feel of the video is generally quite intense in the narrative but very bright in the performance side. We created this by colour grading the different shots using a program called ‘color’ in the post production process.

Mariella: The idea which we wanted to communicate to the audience through our video is the life and the story of the naïve girl. This has been interpreted differently by members of the audience, which suggests that our product is polesymic. We collected feedback though a variety of online platforms like YouTube, Survey Monkey, online questionnaires and a digitally recorded focus groups.

Change of website and digipak

After lots of feedback from friends and teachers, we have decided to go back and change and alter our Digipak and Website. We have done this because we didn't think that they as good as they could be. Liv did a redesign of the CD, which focuses on the simplicity of the title and band name. Liv created a mock up of what we wanted for the front cover to be like, keeping it really simple and following a geometric pattern.

What we will be doing in our focus group meeting:

  • We have 20 minutes to show our video and the artwork. We will then record and video the, discussing what they have seen.

Questions we will ask them:

  1. Do you like the video, if so what do you like about it?
  2. Would you watch this video, if so where and when?
  3. What do you get out of watching it?
  4. Do you feel that you relate to the band, if so how/why?
  5. Do they represent you in any way?
  6. What do this band stand for?
  7. What attitudes do they represent?
  8. Is there a message, if so what?
  9. What do you think could be improved in any of the products?
Do you think they all seem like they are from the same band or are there some differences in the image?

What I need to think about:
  • Is there a difference between the male and female response?
  •  Think about that it is a limited age group of all the same age, same ethnical and economic background
