Storyboarding- What Is A Storyboard?

In our group we are beginning to storyboard our ideas for our music videos and we all asked ourself what is a storyboard and how do you make a good one? We spoke to our teacher and he gave us a lesson on a good storyboard and how to create it.
A storyboard is a graphical representation of camera shots in a film sequence (in our case a music video). All the shots are joined together to a create a narrative flow in the sequence. You draw images that the scene represents and the lighting, sound, movement, shot number, and timing underneath it to give it information and details about the shot, so when it comes to the day of shooting it is a quicker and easier process for you.

Target Audience

Our target audience is from the ages of 16-24.

  • It is a young band in our music video so it attracts girls and also boys who want to look like them - they are almost like inspiration and role models for the boys

  • The girl is going to be very attractive so this also grabs the attention of the boys

  • Uni is an important part of the video which attracts and involves young people

  • The band that we are creating are going to be quite alternative and cool so this will attract other young and upcoming bands

  • The kooks are organic artists, so therefore we will make the band that we are creating organic. This attracts people who like organic and real artists compared to synthetic artists.
Therefore someone like this would listen to their music:

Name: Kitty O’Connor
Age: 18
Occupation: Student

Where do you live?
Right now, I live in Los Angeles with my family but I am originally from Bath.

What kind of music do you like?
Since living in America i’ve become more open to American style artists like Jay- Z and Kanye. But I really enjoy that British sound that comes from bands like The Arctic Monkeys and Two Door Cinema Club.

What about the band attracts you?
Other than the fact the boys are gorge? I love the idea that when a band like this performs it looks like it’s so chilled out and they do it more the music rather than the fame. That’s so much more likable.

Describe your perfect Friday night.
I’ve suddenly got really into going to house parties, it seems to be the thing you do in LA. Because the legal drinking age in America is higher you can’t get into clubs so everyone just has parties at their house. So my perfect Friday night would be going some chilled out concert, then going to a house party just when it starts to get really good.

Treatment 2- finished idea and treatment

Treatment 2: (our finished treatment)
By the way her name Is not Sophoe.. Its Sophia!

The finished idea is that the camera will 'go through walls' and it will look like it is continuous filming. Instead of lots of doors  she is going to go through the original doors and then it will cut to continuous filming to show her life and lifestyle and how it will be depending on which door she chooses.

Treatment 1

We have done two treatments so far.
This treatment was not completely finished because we slightly altered and changed our idea before we finished the idea
Treatment 1:

A rough timeline

This is the first draft of our time line and a new and refined idea. We are still using the same song but a different concept. I will upload a concept and treatment soon!

Our new and refined idea

We refined our idea and came up with a different concept for the music video, but we are keeping the same song 'Naive' by The Kooks.

As a group we went through our ideas and created a new concept and narrative. Here are the notes and ideas that we came up with:

We still want the band to have a vintage and indie look. We also want the band to be playing the music in a big vintage warehouse or a big open space. We would have flashing lights and big windows which we think would fit in really well with the performance location.

The narrative part of the music video is going to be about a girl and her choices in life.
We are going to display the choices of her life in doors.  We started of having two doors where when you open them you have two different situations going on. The first door is is the girl living a happy lifestyle at uni and she is graduating with her family and friends around her and she looks young, healthy and innocent. In the second door you see something completely different. you see the girl living a life of prostitution and you see the girl get picked from a brothel window. This is just a quick summary to our idea.
We then took these ideas to our teachers and they really liked it and are keen for us to develop and improve it.

Emily Tedrake - a visiting lecture

We had a visiting lecture and discussion from a video commissioner from Polydor Records which is part of Universal so it is a big record company.

A video commissioner is a person or place the role of  the point of contact with the artist and the record label, which is part of the process of making the music video. She also goes to the music videos to over look it and to make sure the artist ok.
She works with artists such as Ellie Goulding, 1975, White lies, Lana Del Ray, James Blake etc.
Emily works quite close to the artists and the decisions that are made are normally run by Emily first.

Ellie Goulding- Burn

James Blake - Overgrown

Before Emily came to visit Hurtwood I had no idea what career path that I was going to take, but I now know that I want to be a music video commissioner. I spoke to her after the talk and she gave me some advice in how to get into the industry and I am really excited to start researching and getting in touch with some companies to get work experience.

Presenting my Idea

My group!

Me on the left, Liv, Sophia and Charlie!!!

My group and I presented the idea of the Kooks song and the fantasy festival in the woods with the mad hatters theme. They gave us some points on what to work on and what they liked and didn't like.

Feedback from Luke:

>"I'm not sure about the woods and the reality of people in woods is hard because the setting up and playback is difficult" - Luke wasn't sure the idea of the woods is original enough and it is very much weather dependant which he doesn't like.
>Jason says it's a fantastic song, however Luke does not agree.- Luke finds the song too current and famous. He thinks we should find something a bit more different and quirky.

>Alice in Wonderland is over done.- They get asked if they can do the theme of Alice in Wonderland every year apparently and they think it is a bit boring and mainstream.

>Keep visuals of Alice in Wonderland but not keeping the narrative.- Luke and Jason think that we should still do something that revolves around that kind of theme and idea but it is should not be so obviously Alice and Wonderland. They don't think that people should look at our video and immediately know it is Alice and Wonderland, it should almost undercover.

>ANOTHER WORLD - Luke thinks that if we have Alice falling down into another world we have to make them look much different. Like they should be extra tall or look extremely weird somehow...this is something we need to think about and research. We can't simply have people in the woods wearing makeup, that doesn't look like another world.

‘START YOUR INVESTIGATION OF ALICE AND WANDERLAND'

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Noun-1.naivety - lack of sophistication or worldliness

Alice - Naive - Mad Hatters Tea Part/Alice and wonderland/Love

Young love = Naivety

Alice and Wonderland:
It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world
(she falls into the mad hatters festival and finds love in our music video)
Naïve procedures for a young girl looking for something (love)

The tale plays with logic

In chapter 7 there is a mad tea party - we want to take this and make it into a music video with our own literal and creative TWIST!

AN IDEA.... we could re-create these characters in a less obvious way so the viewers and audience have to work out who is who!!!!! A GAME?

REAL ARTISTS

As a group we are going to re-create our artist or artists in our music video, to make them into a star and have a star image. One of the songs we are looking at for one of our initial ideas is ‘Naive' by The Kooks.

This is their website and as you can see they have three social networking sites
-Twitter
-Facebook
-Instagram
For our artist that we are going to create we will make accounts on all three of these to make them as real as possible.

Their facebook page
>Lots of likes
>Colourful and eye catching

Their Twitter page

>Not too many followers which is good for us
>Current tweets which means in touch with social network all the time to attract fans

Their Instagram page
>Interesting and colourful pictures
>Lots of followers!

Overall , very much involved in social networking, which potentially categorises a fan base for them of the younger generation who use all the social networking more often than an older generation

Their music video - ‘Naive'

We have chosen this song to go with our initial idea 1 because it is a great song but it is also not too recent or mainstream. It is the right image that we want to go with the idea that we have for band in our music video, and creating a star image is really important because it creates a vibe for the artist and the video.

Our other initial Idea would use the song ‘Too Close’ by Alex Clare

Contemporary artist with social networking websites(Facebook and twitter), aimed at a younger generation

Three initial ideas / treatments

IDEA 1
Setting for idea 1

  • Woods
  • Festival/gig
  • Band= boys, vintage-indy clothing(messy look)
  • Fairy lights, lanterns
  • Mad hatters audience

IDEA 2
Setting for idea 2

  • Dark, old room
  • pictures spread over floor of a couple/relationship
  • girl in t-shirt, crying, grungey look
  • flash backs to an argument of girl and partner
  • when music drops, slow motion smashing of vase/glass

These are two ideas that we have come up with so far. We are still thinking about the next two ideas and we are struggling. We have thought of some good songs though, that we want to put videos too.

Songs :

Introduction to A2 - ADVANCED PORTFOLIO

I really enjoyed studying AS media last year and I am really looking forward to taking it a step further and making music videos. I feel like I am ready to go out and confidently use a camera, the software and equipment.

The A2 course consists of:
-Music video
-Digi pack

-Website

We need to create all of these three things to create a star and a star image.

So far I have looked at some videos to try and draw inspiration from them:

1. (I FINK YOU FREEKY)

This video is very freaky! It is so different and weird that it shows my group and I that if we want to do a 'weird' video we really need to think outside of the box!

2. (IF I WERE A BOY)

3. (TEENAGE DREAM)

These two videos have some kind of narrative. I think it is important for videos to have a narrative to make them clear to the viewer.
My group is not yet sure which song we are going to feature so watching videos is giving us ideas and song choices.
